Exports of the Brazilian pet sector grow 54% in ten years
Value reaches BRL 412.5 million in 2021 and should exceed BRL 495 million this year; South American countries lead the ranking
The Brazilian pet sector raised BRL 412.5 million with exports in 2021. The data are from the Pet Brasil Sectorial Project, a program that encourages Brazilian companies in the pet segment to internationalize their businesses. The project is an initiative of the IPB (Instituto Pet Brasil), an institution that has been encouraging the development of the Brazilian pet sector for nine years, in partnership with ApexBrasil (Agência Brasileira de Promoção de Exportações e Investimentos).
According to the data, revenue from exports in 2021 corresponds to an increase of 32.8% compared to 2020 (BRL 310.5 million) and a growth of 54% in ten years (in 2012, the value was BRL 267.7 million).
Latin American countries stand out among those to which Brazil exports the most (in this regard, the data are updated until the first half of 2022). Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Paraguay occupy the first positions in the ranking, while the United States fell from second in 2021 to fifth in 2022. Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, and Norway complete this year’s ranking.
“The whole world praises the creativity and ability of the Brazilian pet entrepreneur. However, companies often end up restricting their solutions only to the domestic market. These updated data underscore our country’s potential in international business and the importance of national companies paying attention to the outside world, especially to Latin America’s neighbors”, says Nelo Marraccini, president of the IPB’s Advisory Board.
Exports help make up the revenue of the Brazilian pet sector, which in 2021 was BRL 51.7 billion, an increase of 27% over the previous year. Only five countries in the world have higher revenues than Brazil: the United States, which dominates the world market with 44.8% of the total, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan. The IPB projects growth of over 14.7% this year, reaching a turnover of BRL 58.9 billion.
How to export?
The Pet Brasil Sectorial Project offers guidance to companies interested in exporting their products and services and promotes the Brazilian pet sector through trade missions, business roundtables, and Brazilian delegations at international fairs. Countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Peru, China, and the United Arab Emirates are among the focuses of the business roundtables in the project calendar in 2022.
The fair calendar began in March, at Global Pet Expo, in Orlando (USA), with the intermediation of Brazilian companies for the event. IPB was also present and supported national businesses at Interzoo (held in May in Germany). The International Pet Meeting (November, in Brazil) is also part of the calendar.
Brazilian companies can express interest in participating in the international actions promoted by the IPB by filling out the form at this link: https://bit.ly/3Npq1Ww. In addition to participating in exclusive events, participants in the Pet Brasil Sectorial Project have benefits such as the fair floor, coordination of stand assembly, and event coordination.
